The Profile
I wasn’t a “natural” at math. I was the student who spent hours in the library, deconstructing logic until it finally made sense. Because I had to earn my understanding, I know exactly how to help students build theirs. It’s not just about solving a problem; it’s about knowing what to do when the logic fails—and staying with it long enough for it to break open.
That perspective informs everything I do. As a head masters swim coach, triathlete, and former ski patrol, I’ve spent decades in environments where staying calm, thinking clearly, and being accountable in real time are the baseline. Whether I’m navigating a technical descent or a high-stakes exam, the requirement is the same: maintain focus and execute with precision.
The outdoors is my sanctuary. I find my balance moving between the mountains of Georgia, the energy of New York City, and the water. Whether I’m surfing, swimming, or on a long bike ride, moving between these environments is where I reset. That balance keeps me sharp and ready for the next challenge.
The goal is intellectual partnership. My favorite moments are when the dynamic shifts—when we are no longer “tutor and student,” but a team working through problems side by side. When a student questions the logic or offers a different approach, they aren’t just learning—they are demonstrating mastery.
These exams are not the end goal—they are the gateway. Having designed university entrance and exit exams, I know that a score is simply a tool. It opens doors, creates options, and gives students the agency to choose their own path. That is the work. That is the outcome.
